*“I will not rest for the sake of Jerusalem: Russian activity in the Holy Land in the late 19th and early 20th centuries”*
(author's excursion by Evgeny Davydov).
From the 1830s until the beginning of World War I, major European powers were active in Palestine, the purpose of which was to provide assistance to European pilgrims, as well as to assist the local Arab population in the field of education and health care.
Using humanitarian goals, these countries tried to expand their political influence in the East. One of these countries was the Russian Empire.
Russia had an undeniable advantage in the competition with other European powers for influence in the Middle East: most of the pilgrims visiting the Holy Land were Russian citizens, and most of the local Christians seeking protection and patronage from European countries were Orthodox.
🏥 Starting in the mid-19th century, Russia managed to acquire huge tracts of land in Palestine and create a developed network of religious, educational and medical institutions. A significant part of the Russian sites in the Holy Land are located in Jerusalem and we will get to know them during our excursion.
▪︎We will start our route at the Russian Compound in the center of Jerusalem,
▪︎We will visit the Sergeyevsky Compound, returned several years ago by Israel to the Russian Federation, we will visit the Compound Museum,
▪︎We will go to the Holy Trinity Cathedral - the main Russian church in the Holy Land. ⛰️Then we will climb the Mount of Olives, where we will visit the Russian Monastery of Olives.
🌳From the top of the Mount of Olives, we will go down to the Russian Gethsemane Monastery, visit the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, where St. Elizabeth Feodorovna and St. Barbara are buried.
Then we will head to the Old City, where we will visit the Alexander Compound with the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky and see the threshold of the Judgment Gate, through which Christ was led to Golgotha.
Our excursion will end with a visit to the Gornensky Monastery in Ein Karem, the largest Russian monastery in the Holy Land.
➡️ Duration of the excursion is 12 hours.
💰 Cost 220 shekels.
